Welcome to the second of Golfshake’s 2022 Winter Golf Buying Guides where we round up the best items and gear that you should consider buying to support your golf over the winter.
This week, we’re taking a look at winter golf hats – including beanies, snoods and all manner of fuzzy conceptions – that will keep the rain off your face and the wind off your head when you’re playing in tough weather. There’s a lot of different brands and styles to choose from and these are just a few of our favourites.
FJ Knit Beanie
This classic hat has a muted style that will appeal to players looking for something that does the job and doesn’t shout about it: John Daly need not apply. Black and two shades of gray are the colour schemes on offer, which suit the winter weather. In terms of performance the knit beanie takes after FootJoy’s other popular hat style – the bobble hat – in featuring stretch knit construction giving a comfortable fit as well as a fleece earband, bringing extra comfort and warmth.
Men’s UA Storm Beanie
UA Storm technology is something of a trail blazer for Under Armour. It repels water while allowing breathability, which is just what you want in a good winter beanie. The fleece lining used in this hat is light and stretchy, so will keep you warm while hugging tight to your head. Made from 100% polyester the Storm Beanie also features a brushed interior designed to trap heat even more.
Men’s UA Halftime Cuff Beanie
Featuring Under Armour’s stand ribbed acrylic knit fabric and material wicking to remove sweat, the Halftime cuff beanie keeps the performance you need while sporting a very slimmed back, minimalist design. It’s simple and sleek, black with a small Under Armour logo on the front. This would be ideal for someone who wants to look stylish but not conspicuous on the course while staying in condition to tackle the winter elements.
Mizuno Breath Thermo Graphic Beanie
Four different colours – grey, black, blue and olive – are on offer for this classically designed beanie hat. Each comes with a Mizuno logo on the front cuff and a spider webbing pattern on the top, and are also made from the brand’s heat-generating Breath Thermo fabric to ensure comfort and warmth. One size fits all.
FJ Bobble Hat
FootJoy don’t just make shoes you know. In recent years the brand has expanded its offerings and among its best non-shoe products this bobble hat comes near the top of the list. It’s an elegant beast, sporting a black base with lime and charcoal lines and a lime, charcoal and black threaded bobble that looks the business. This is a knitted hat so is plenty warm and this is only improved by an inner fleece earband which makes sure your ears in particular stay warm and toasty. Although it’s knitted, the hat has enough stretch to suit a variety of head shapes and customer reviews say that it is very well fitting, unlike some hats never moving about as you swing.
Men’s UA Halftime Fleece Pom Beanie
Worn by the likes of Jordan Spieth, Under Armour’s pom beanie is an extremely good-looking hat which offers warmth and comfort in spades. The hat is constructed by ribbed acrylic knit fabric which locks in the heat and added material wicks sweat for a fast dry. In addition, Under Armour have added an interior brushed fleece lined, giving added warmth.
UA Men’s ColdGear Infrared Driver Pom Beanie
This classic-design hat features a bobble design and soft knit fabric. Under Armour’s ColdGear Infrared technology helps make this pom beanie stand out from the crowd, with its special, soft print on the inside holding in body heat without adding weight or bulk. Under Armour attests that it keeps you warmer, longer – so you can play your best even in the harshest conditions.
Oscar Jacobson Tammis
With a deep turned-up hem, giving warmth aplenty in all conditions, and marl knitted fabric, this is a high quality and high performing hat. It’s 100% acrylic in terms of the materials, but double knit for extra heft and protection from the elements. A spotted gray base colour scheme is complemented by a black hem and bauble for a pleasingly understated yet classy look.
Farah Hutch Bobble Hat
This hat has been marl knitted and given a deep rolled hem to lock in heat and make sure to keep you warm on a cold day on the golf course. Like others on this list, it has a stretch fit to ensure that one size can accommodate all head sizes, with its thermal insulation providing another layer of protection against the elements and bobble giving a classic look.
Galvin Green Lemmy
Galvin Green are known for making high performance subtly designed gear that’s no frills, and the Lemmy continues this lineage. Plain blue, gray or pink, the Lemmy is a knitted windproof bobble-hat, which uses ear lining and a breathable top to keep you warm yet let out sweat during your rounds.
Stromberg Junior Pom Knit Golf Hat
One for the kids this. If your nipper wants a smart and quality golf appearance they could do worse than the Stromberg pom hat. Featuring a warm acrylic fabric, a traditional cuff, bobble and plenty of insulation, it’s guaranteed to keep you toasty when the wind rages. It’s also a very well-designed hat with a gray base working well alongside blue and black detailing. While it’s targeted for kids, it would also look good on small-headed adults.
Mizuno Breath Thermo Pom Pom Beanie
With striped pattering and a classic pom pom, this beanie has an old school look that purists will adore. Gray, black and blue and red options are available, but if you want our pick, the red based beanie with black detailing is surely the best looking. Whatever colour you plump for you’ll get Breath Thermo technology keeping you warm and a stretchy knitted material to ensure that one size fits all.
Snoods are in fashion these days. Gone are the days when golfers had to make do with fusty billed caps. Now you can look like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible and be welcomed on the course. The FJ snood is one of the best you can buy, made from high quality thermal materials that will keep you warm while allowing it to stretch over your head for all manner of wearing styles. It also provides windproof protection and is one of the best-looking snoods you’ll find, too, with a black base spotted with miniature white FootJoy logos.
Galvin Green Dex
The Dex is a stylish snood, available in six colours (from red, to gray to pink to blue and various shades thereof) each adorned with a GG logo. It provides excellent heat and insulation and is also among the most durable and easy to look after winter hats you will find.
PING SensorDry Bucket Golf Hat
Channel your inner Valtteri Bottas with a bucket hat. It’s a classic look that never goes out of style and, in PING’s guise, does a great job of protecting your head and face from the elements too. It sports a fully seam-sealed waterproof material and is also wind resistant. An adjustable drawcord allows you to tether the hat to your chin to stop it blowing away.
